I was a little worried about this box under the tree when my cat got really interested in it…inside were scraps and pieces of parchment, leather and skins from Pergamena. They discovered this company, which specializes in products for calligraphy, book conservation, historical reproductions, and fine bindings, while watching the Discovery Channel’s Dirty Jobs with Mike Rowe (one of my fav shows).
More and more I’ve been incorporating collage into my paintings and looking for unusual materials to try. This is the most unusual so far and I can’t wait to get started.
I enjoyed a really great low-key Christmas day at my parent’s house. Opened presents, scrambled eggs and toast, good group cat play (my cat Izzy came with me), and a short nap to complete the day!
I hope you’re holiday was as great- Happy Holidays to you and your family!

I spent some time this week aimlessly wandering and taking pictures on the grounds of the Indianapolis Art Center this week for their blog (which I also write). With dazzling sunlight I took several pictures for myself as well.
Some of these images will become inspiration for a new series of paintings and collages that are currently in the works. I haven’t been this excited about a series in a while and have received some great feedback on the pieces that are already done. It’s really encouraging and reassuring when others appreciate a new direction. I’m hammering out the details for a show at Wug Laku’s Studio & Garage in February and will hopefully have a ton of new work to show.
In addition to the show at Wug’s, I’m starting earnest work on a book of my own (which may or may not be done in time for the show). It’s tenatively title Undiscovered: the Art and Inspiration of Kate Oberreich. I’m pairing finished work with photos (like these) and other samplings to illustrate my creative process. You’ll be able to see the completed artwork side-by-side with some of the things that inspired it.
For now, just enjoy. I’m still in the process of collecting everything and running around with my camera.

I’ve been working for some time on laying out and completing a book of my dad’s photographs from his trip to Paris in 1996. It’s a project that he started almost immediately after returning from this trip (and honeymoon). He hand picked the images and for the most part the order.
I picked up where he left off, choosing the final layout, designing the opening pages and cover, writing the copy and researching publishing options.
The result is The Paris Book, approximately 70 pages featuring the iconic and eclectic locations and people of Paris. And here’s your preview!
But wait there’s more!

I hope to have The Paris Book available for sale by the end of December 2009. It will retail for about $35-45. In an effort to keep it going, 50% of the net proceeds from the sale of each book will go to the Stephen B. Oberreich Memorial Scholarship at Ball State University, benefitting art majors.
A firm launch date will be announced within the next couple weeks.

Some bits of sky…

I wanted to pass on my thanks to all who visited the Stutz Holiday Exhibition last Friday night. It was a great show for me, resulting in a sizeable donation going to the Stephen B. Oberreich Memorial Scholarship later this week.
If you missed the show, you can view many of the pieces I had exhibited, here. Still in support of the scholarship, 50% of the proceeds from the sale pieces in the ‘Stutz Holiday Exhibition’ gallery on my website will be donated as well (now through December 31). This scholarship benefits serious art students at Ball State University. Both my dad and I are graduates of this great arts program.
We also received some great coverage in The Design File, a local interior design blog. Read the review, here.
